Signal in Smoke

The stairs curve like a question broken mid-sentence, their iron shoulders filmed in dust and something older than fear. Steam moves in sighing ribbons, tasting faintly of metal and long-doused fires, while the single worded plea—WHERE VOJTA?—tilts above a cluster of optic lenses that blink like weary stars tangled in wire. Shadows crowd the upper gallery; their shapes seem patient, yet their silence presses like a vow deferred. Then sudden motions pulse: muzzle lifting, breath hitching, cartridges rolling, lights flaring, hearts vaulting across thresholds of doubt. The little lamp bolted to a capsule spins and spills radiance, chasing green EXIT letters that promise release yet taunt with distance. And still, within this vaporous corridor scented of oil and smoke and haunting absence, no step leads to him, no voice hums his name—Vojta drifts beyond reach, unanswered, dissolving beyond the curve of this stair like a hushed prayer in iron fog.
